Various tests have been developed to try to identify those women at greatest risk of having a chromosomally abnormal baby, such as a Down Syndrome, who could then decide whether or not to proceed to amniocentesis.
The TripleTest or Barts Test at about 15 weeks into the pregnancy detects approximately 70% of Down Syndrome pregnancies. This down syndrome test is based on about one in every 25 (4%) women having the blood test ending up with a high risk result (i.e. more than one in 150) and then proceeding to amniocentesis.
Over the last twenty years, new technology has improved the methods of detection of fetal abnormalities, including when providing a down syndrome test. While there are ways to diagnose abnormalities through a down syndrome test by obtaining fetal tissue samples by amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling, it would not be appropriate to examine every pregnancy this way.
Although diagnostic, these tests do carry a slight risk to the fetus. But in order to check, down syndrome tests are carried out if the woman - after being subjected to some screening tests - have shown to be at "high risk". These pregnancies are then candidates for further diagnostic testing.
An ultrasound scan is cyclic sound pressure with a frequency greater than the upper limit of human hearing. Although this limit varies from person to person, it is approximately 20kilohertz (20,000 hertz) in healthy, young adults and thus, 20 kHz serves as a useful lower limit in describing ultrasound scans.
The production of the ultrasound scan is used in many different fields, typically to penetrate a medium and measure the reflection signature or supply focused energy. The reflection signature can reveal details about the inner structure of the medium. The most well known application of ultrasound scans is its use in sonography to produce pictures of fetuses in the human womb. There are a vast number of other applications for it as well, such as a pelvic ultrasound scan. We would advise a pelvic ultrasound scan as part of the initial investigation in women with fertility problems to check that the uterus appears normal and whether the ovaries have a polycystic appearance.
We offer a range of tests, including pregnancy scans, ultrasound scans and other medical services at our fertility clinic to help couples who are battling to conceive a baby.
Our fertility clinic, run by experienced and expert medical staff also provides consultations, specialist tests to check ovulation, tubular patency and male factor infertility problems. The fertility clinic also offers various other therapies for women and couples to help them to conceive.
Many people ask 'why have early pregnancy scans?' The answer is clear - early pregnancy scans can detect an ectopic pregnancy, confirm a pregnancy, identify twins or triplets and more. The estimated due date can also be worked out through pregnancy scans. Having early pregnancy scans can also identify major abnormalities and identify twins.
The antenatal care clinic at Innermost Secrets is very thorough in guiding and advising pregnant mothers-to-be. An antenatal care booklet is available to pregnant women in the NHS in England and Wales. This antenatal care book explains key advice from NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) and is useful to read through to answer any questions you may have during your pregnancy. The booklet aims to help you understand the antenatal care that should be available in the NHS during your pregnancy and what you can expect throughout your time as an expectant mum.
