Cervical stress test at 14-24 weeks (increasing transfundal intrauterine pressure while monitoring cervical length and the appearance of funneling is recommended for patients with:
  • history of painless dilatation followed by delivery in the second trimester
  • uterine malformations (uterus unicornis, uterus bicornis, uterus didelphys)
  • cervical trauma (conization)
  • history of spontaneous and therapeutic abortions
  • preterm birth before 32 weeks.

Cervical incompetence affects about 1% of pregnacies and causes mid trimester miscarriage and premature labour and delivery.

A Cervical Scan can assess the length and appearance of the cervix as it has been shown that the opening of the internal part of the cervix (funnelling), or the shortening of the cervix, is a good predictor of mid-pregnancy miscarriage and premature labour.
Sometimes a special stitch (cervical cerclage or McDonald Suture) may be advised to help prolong the pregnancy.
